Etymology: In a lost unfigurative sense the worthless bare stalk of a certain plant, * either the ubiquitous dandelion also named Pfaffenplume, Low German Pappenblome, * or, as in the 16th century where this idiom is also is from, Rübenstiel has been used in this sense, Low German Piepe (“turnip”) whence pfeifen auf etw., es ist mir piepe, piepegal if that is not instead from the bird-imitating piep, * or instead Pappelstiel points to Pappel (“poplar”) because the poplar-wood is a fast-growing, cheap wood too soft to manufacture instruments from it.
